Abstract: Regulation of chromosome condensation is essential for genome function. A key regulator of chromosome condensation is the evolutionarily conserved multi-subunit protein complex called condensin. Condensins are essential for proper chromosome segregation during cell division and regulate gene expression during interphase in bacteria to humans. The molecular function of condensins depend on their remarkable ring structure which holds two distant sites together to form chromosomal loops. I will present our progress in discovering the molecular mechanisms of condensin function in two model organisms C. elegans and S. cerevisiae.
